The latest numbers from the Central Statistics Office make for grim reading. According to the Labour Force Survey, employment across food and beverage businesses in Ireland has fallen by almost 20,000 in the space of just 12 months. For an industry already under serious strain, this is a deeply worrying trend.

Across the wider hospitality sector, employment dropped from 186,500 in the first quarter of 2025 to 169,600 in the first quarter of 2026. But strip out accommodation businesses and focus purely on food-led hospitality, and the picture gets even darker. That segment of the sector shed roughly 20,000 jobs, falling from 136,000 to 116,000. This is a decline of nearly 15% in a single year.

Adrian Cummins, chief executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, described the figures as “incredibly worrying” and “a frightening drop.” He pointed to rising operating costs, and labour costs in particular, as the driving force behind the crisis. Businesses across the country have been sounding the alarm for some time, warning that the pressure had become simply unsustainable.

The evidence of that pressure is visible on the ground. Many operators have already cut their trading hours or closed entirely on quieter midweek days, trying to stay afloat by doing less rather than growing.

One piece of relief is on the horizon. The government has confirmed it will restore the 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector from 1 July, a move the Restaurants Association has long been calling for. Cummins welcomed the decision, saying it would provide essential breathing space for thousands of businesses and the jobs they support, though he was quick to add that the jobs data shows just how urgently that relief is needed.

The core message from the industry is clear: the VAT reduction is welcome and necessary, but it cannot come soon enough. With nearly 20,000 jobs already gone in a year, the sector needs every bit of support it can get.
